Newton North senior Pat Mullowney scored the game-winning goal with a little more than two minutes left in a 4-on-4 double-overtime Friday night as the Tigers upset top-seeded Braintree in the Division 1 South quarterfinals.
The eighth-seeded Tigers (14-6-3) advance to face the winner of Saturday’s game between Walpole and Franklin at Bourne’s Gallo Arena Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in a sectional semifinal contest.
North coach Jamie Gresser said before the meeting of the Bay State Conference Carey Division rivals that the goal was to come out fast and the Tigers did just that with two goals in the first period. Mullowney put North up 1-0, then Zac Gordon made it 2-0.
Braintree halved the deficit in the second period and pulled even with about three minutes left in the third.
The teams then played one 5-on-5 overtime before North won it in the 4-on-4 second OT.
“Thomas Joyce played outstanding in net,” Gresser said, “and the work ethic was there from the drop of the puck.”
Gresser praised the play of his three centers – Mike Hart, Dante Leone and Gordon – as well as that of forwards Ben Lublin and Lawrence DuPont.
“I have no idea how many minutes Curtis Judd played at defense,” he added, “but his ability to control the play was impressive throughout.”
